You only have to come visit us twice a year (hopefully!) but we know for some people that’s two times too many. Why can’t it be once a year? Or every other year? There are important reasons we have you come in every six months and it isn’t *just* to get those teeth clean. Taking good care of your mouth does more than help to ensure that you have a bright, white smile. Having a healthy mouth and healthy body go hand in hand!
Let’s take a look at some numbers:
- Dental studies indicate that about 85% of all adults in the U.S. have some form of gum disease.
- 99% of people will develop a cavity at least once in their lifetimes.
- According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, close to 49,750 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer just this year alone!!!
Those are some high numbers, right!? Regular check-ups, however, means that likelihood of catching decay in its earliest stages is very high, which equals less cavities. Early detection of decay also means: 1) less risk of infections because you’re stopping the problem in its tracks; 2) keeping more of your own teeth; and 3) saving money (because you’re not having more expensive and invasive procedures if caught early). When it comes to oral cancer, the earlier it’s found, the better. It’s important to identify any signs as early as possible, and the best way to do that is through regular dental care. Oh, and having a healthy mouth can reduce your risk for many serious diseases, including heart disease and pancreatic cancer.
Do the twice a year check-ups sound quite as bad now? We hope not! These check-ups are vitally important to your health as they allow for early detection of not only gum disease but the rest of your health as well.
